Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center presents new practitioners and Art with Aloha talks and workshops this January. This program is supported in part by the County of Maui and the Office of Economic Development. Offering include: Lance Genson Mahi La Pierre Lance Genson Mahi La Pierre is a mixed-media artisan and educator from Maunalua and Kapalama on Oahu. He has worked in the fields of education, conservation and natural and cultural resource management for the last 26 years. Mahi enjoys exploring, perpetuating and sharing the art and science of Hawaiian indigenous knowledge and practices. Mahi's passion for creating traditional and modern interpretations of na mea Hawaii (Hawaiian things), such as 'ukeke (musical bow) and holua (land sleds) is fueled by an innate curiosity about Hawaiian practices that are not commonplace today. • 10-11 a.m. Jan. 4 — "Talk Story" with Lance Genson Mahi La Pierre. Free. Join Mahi La Pierre for a casual and informative conversation about his exploration of Hawaiian practices. ![]() Rose Bailey to host a lei-making workshop Jan. 6. • Noon-4 p.m. Jan. 4 — 'Ukeke Workshop. Make your own 'ukeke in this hands-on workshop. Using bamboo, students will fashion the Hawaii-an musical bow, the 'ukeke (approximately 20 inches length). The 'ukeke is the only indigenous stringed instrument of Hawaii and is used to accompany hula and mele, and for ho'ipo'ipo, or love talk, between lovers. Mahi will also share and teach participants to make a traditional mele 'ukeke. Tuition: $25. Supply fee: $10. Register at huinoeau.com. Rose Pi'ilani Bailey Born and raised on her grandparents' Kula farm, Rose Pi'ilani Bailey is a hula dancer and Hawaiian arts practitioner. She has learned family traditions that have been passed down for many generations and takes pride in using many native Hawaiian plants and materials in her lei making and other hana no'eau (arts). She uses local flowers grown at her own home, fresh from the farm, to make lei and floral arrangements. In addition, Rose collaborates on special events such as weddings and graduations, teaches the art of lei making and hula, tends to her family's fruit and flower farms, and styles photo shoots. • Noon-3 p.m. Jan. 6 — Lei Making Workshop. Spend the afternoon learning to make lei and you'll walk away with a beautiful handmade lei to wear or share with someone special. Rose will teach a new style during each session. Tuition: $15. Supply Fee: $18. Register online at huinoeau.com. ![]() 'Ohe kapala carvings by Nalu Andrade Nalu Andrade Nalu Andrade has been carving 'ohe kapala and bone makau and ko'i for about 30 years. In 2015, Nalu created his business, Na Maka Kahiko. Blending the old with the new, he created his hand-carved 'ohe kapala earrings inspired by designs found at the Bishop Museum. Nalu sells not only earrings, but also hair picks, 'ohe kapala stamps, bone makau and ko'i, 'ohe hana ihu, 'ohe pu, and hu 'oeoe. Nalu believes in always growing his skill as a carver and has found inspiration through his workshops. Nalu resides in Honouliuli with his wife and children. • 3-4 p.m. Jan. 17 — "Talk Story" with Nalu Andrade. Free. See samples of his work and learn about his many creative endeavors. • 9 a.m. to noon Jan 18 — 'Ohe Kapala Workshop, Session 1. • 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 18 — 'Ohe Kapala Workshop, Session 2. Learn to carve 'ohe kapala stamps with Na Maka Kahiko founder Nalu Andrade. Nalu will guide students step by step through the process of carving. Participants will also learn the meaning behind the patterns of the 'ohe kapala. This class is appropriate for beginners and advanced artists. Tuition: $30.
